Can Mosque debate get any dumber?

The debate over the proposed mosque to be built near Ground Zero has reached an all time low in quality of debate.  On the one hand, we have a New York Islamic group claiming that it is, “unethical, insensitive and inhumane” to oppose the mosque (I’ll agree with insensitive, but unethical and inhumane?).  Not sure if they realized they were in the United States where we get to oppose things we choose to oppose, even mosques.  Then, we have a report (I am attempting to verify) that opponents are driving around the site with a mock-up of a missile – Not a great way to persuade those that disagree with you – jerks!

I hope this report turns out to be a crank and I hope the Muslim group takes back its claim, because if not, I’d hate to see how the debate could get any dumber.

We’re being insensitive? I didn’t know we were trying to build a church in Mecca.

It is possible that we are being insensitive. I do not expect the Saudi’s to accept a church or synagogue in Mecca. They are not at all an open society. We are better than they are. I also believe, firmly, that whether you support or oppose this mosque you have to agree that the builders are themselves insensitive to the extreme. This mosque may turn out to be a valuable center for achieving peace with Islam and freeing the millions (i.e. women) abused in their societies. Even with that, it will still be insensitive.

However, dragging a parade float of a missile past the site of the proposed mosque is also insensitive. It just is.
