John Kerry avoids taxes on luxurious yacht

Senator John Kerry probably has the legal right to dock his yacht in Rhode Island as opposed to his home state of Massachusetts in order to avoid the onerous Massachusetts state taxes on his new, multi-million dollar yacht.  According to the Boston Herald, the former presidential candidate and frequent supporter of tax increases will avoid a six figure state tax bill.

His yacht, according to the Herald is, “76-foot New Zealand-built Friendship sloop with an Edwardian-style, glossy varnished teak interior, two VIP main cabins and a pilothouse fitted with a wet bar and cold wine storage.”  Sounds nice.

However, one can not be faulted for seeing Kerry’s actions as hypocritical, taking advantage of his great wealth to protect his wealth, and perhaps even taking advantage of his membership in the privileged U.S. political class.

Perhaps paying taxes is only right for the little people.  Politicians like Kerry seem only willing to tax others, or pay high taxes when doing so does not actually impact their lifestyles.

Oh well.  Happy sails to Kerry and Heinz.

Final note:  I wonder how many homeless families Kerry could house on that yacht?

They don’t call it Taxachusetts for nothing.

It’s not the first time a Mass. politician did that; a GOP gubernatorial candidate did that back in 2006, but there’s no follow-up as to whether or not he paid (or pays) the tax bill.

$7M, 76 foot yacht…geez…I mean, I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money.
