Peggy Noonan’s state of a failing union address

Folks, I keep scrolling through the most recent column by the Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan, looking for the best quotes.  But there is no single, best quote here.  You have to read her column in total, and it is worth the time.  Every American should read this column.  None of the statements on the state of the Union from Presidents Bush or Obama have done justice to the crisis this nation is in like this column.

Noonan uses the Arizona law to fight illegal immigration to enlighten readers on so much more.  She explains that, “Arizonans have a crisis on their hands, areas on the border where criminal behavior flourishes, where there have been kidnappings, murders and gang violence.”  But as much as Noonan’s column is about Arizona’s law, it is really about a failed federal government and “a deep and growing alienation between the people of America and the government of America in Washington.”

“But the larger point is that Arizona is moving forward because the government in Washington has completely abdicated its responsibility. For 10 years—at least—through two administrations, Washington deliberately did nothing to ease the crisis on the borders because politicians calculated that an air of mounting crisis would spur mounting support for what Washington thought was appropriate reform—i.e., reform that would help the Democratic and Republican parties.”

I urge you to read her article here.

Folks, We the People have abandoned our nation to a political class; entrenched and self interested that doesn’t give a damn about you or I, except to get our vote.  Is Arizona’s law unconstitutional?  Maybe.  But the bigger issue is that the federal government, presidents Bush and now Obama, and Congress, have completely abdicated their fundamental responsibility.  But at least we’ll all have great health care that’ll reduce the deficit.  Yup.  I believe that one.

The fence is continuing to be built; the raids on workplaces started during GW Bush’s administration are continuing. Illegal immigration is decreasing, because of the lack of jobs. The increase in crime along the borders has to do with the drug war going on in Mexico. Someone on a tourist visa can come in and commit a crime, but a person here illegally will now not be able to cooperate with law enforcement to help solve these drug crimes (not that there was a great deal of cooperation, but now there can be none). Noonan is right that the issue is being demagogued, but her statement that the federal government won’t enforce the law is a prime example.
