Have you heard the recent statements from some of the most important global warming scientists? If not, you can read some of the reports at the Sunday Times Online, the BBC and read some excellent commentary at Best Of the Web Today.
For the purposes of this article you need only know that there is a lot of backtracking and clarification occurring. Some are saying the case for global warming melted. A colleague told me the other day that he thought that global warmists had hijacked the legitimate environmental movement. Whatever the interpretation you accept, there is the inescapable fact that the global warming movement wasted a lot of resources and reputations.
While others focus on what has been, I want to focus on the future. We need to clean up the mess. I have a proposal as to how to do that.
I want to begin with an assumption, followed by a question. Let’s assume that we are going to develop a plan to do something good with at least part of the resources that were applied to the problem of global warming. Yes, I know, no good deed goes unpunished. But I have an advantage here that I can use to promote a good cause; no one expects kindness from a blog titled, Mind Your Own Damn Business Politics.
Now the question: What could have been done with those resources in order to do good? And therefore, what can we do going forward?
According to CNN and TED, Esther Duflo is a poverty economist. This means that Professor Duflo tests ideas for alleviating poverty. That is a far different approach than the normal approach of providing foreign aid, most of which ends up in the hands of dictators, making the people receiving the aid worse off. What if she had been given the resources that went to global warming?
I can give you a couple of thoughts as to how that might have worked. She might be on her way to lifting large groups of people out of poverty, thus saving lives, creating new economies to trade with in the world, and reducing terrorism and crime. And you know what else? Had she succeeded at lifting people out of poverty, and the planet’s climate does change in the future (science shows that climate change is a constant and has been since long before humans appeared) those people would be able to rely on their resources to take care of themselves, and the entire world would be richer and better able to assist them.
Instead, we are here at what appears to be the beginning of the end of this wave of mass hysteria with nothing to show for it. We can change course. We can find more of the Duflos and dump the Gores.
I would like to see what other ideas people have for using resources that would have been lost fighting global warming. What ideas do you have that are related to the concept of enabling people to become educated, self reliant, and to achieve things via self reliance, education and freedom that make the world a better place?
Readers – your thoughts?

It’s really disheartening that there appears to be some sloppy science behind the global warming debate. I’m still concerned. Sea levels are rising, the configuration of plants to concrete is changing, and levels of pollution are rising worldwide. I’m struck by the fact that weather stations are put up in natural places, but it’s getting harder to find places where the encroachment of development doesn’t create localized warming. The scientific community is doing what it needs to do, continuing to review evidence and revising conclusions. Let’s spend a portion of that money collecting better data so we can make good decisions about how best to preserve our environment. There are certainly plenty of issues–how about the big field of plastic debris twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean?
It is for just the reasons you state that I brought up the point about warmists hijacking the environmental agenda. We are screwing up this planet. Let’s focus on the real issues like the debris in the oceans, the posions in our water and air and on our land. We still need to replace carbon based fuels and find ways to handle the waste we create — but we have to do it sensibly and not via scare tactics. The damage warmists have caused to the credibility of the environmental movement is too large to measure. Instead of saving the planet they have committed to its demise.

You too funny!!! They, the fraudsters, have come out and admitted the IS NO GLOBAL WARMING..You dig?
I hates to be cliche, but when you believe in leftist, socialist, propoganda, you will fall for anything…You da proof…!
No. They’re saying that there is no way to measure temperature changes reliably. We still have the pesky issue of rising CO2 levels and rising sea levels, and then there would be more to figure out about the role humans play in the matter. I haven’t fallen for anything, but neither should you. There may be no way to answer the question one way or the other right now. Meanwhile, there are changes going on on this planet–rising pollution, droughts, poor air quality.

Nobody I know is for pollutilon, droughts, poor air, and basket case economies. . But this AGW deal is folding fast, as the facts come to light. I’d be interested in your thoughts.

Every single pokititian who wants to be re-elected, needs to declare AGW (man-made GW) a complete scam and that any legislation based adressing this myth will be immediately scrapped.
Declare Algore a fraud and that investigations will be pending. We have experienced record colds throughout the world over the last several years, in some cases over a dozen people died due to the cold.
The science does not support any of the claims AGW proponents have made, which is why the manipulated data and hid data ["Hide the decline"], tampered with sensors, politicized the peer review process and engaged in a smear campaign against real scientists that didn’t sellout for a few shekels of grant money.
Stop entertaining this criminality designed solely to fleece the taxpayer, enrich elitist politicians and limit our freedoms. The Founding Fathers fought a Revolution for far less. Make it clear, any politician that doesn’t reject this will be removed in Nov.
Algore should be criminally charged for conspiracy and fraud on the grandest scale. Madoff went to prison for less. Frankly these leftwing traitors should be publicly executed.
I’ve yet to see evidence for fraud. Science is messy, and compiling temperature data over geological time is bound to be very difficult. The consequences of human generated global warming could be terrible and irreversable, so I think the scientific community is right to have shared their conclusions. It looks as though problems in the data, now tat they have come to light are being considered and weighed, and the conclusions may be changing as well. There are other reasons to take action to improve the environment.
Deniers have an economic interest for being skeptical and advocating doing nothing–if climate change turns out to happen, do you want to execute them? Come on, this is just not helpful!

You wouldn’t know fraud if it bit you on yo’ fat ass.. O’course it be fraud…They be lying ’bout the temps for 15 f**kin’ years, what you gonna call that… honesty…??
Wake TF up…You beyond hopeless…
An don’t answer me back…You be makin’ a bigger fool o’ yoself…
Quit while you behind…
If scientists across all disciplines want to retain what little creditability is left after the damage done by their climatological colleagues, they should rein those colleagues in and tell them that the exaggerations and distortions that have until now increased their funding at the hands of scientifically-illiterate politicians will soon have the opposite effect.
As the world continues to fail to warm as predicted (or, for the past 15 years, at all), fewer and fewer will believe the exaggerations, and more and more will resent the trillions of dollars that have been wasted on bogus research providing bogus backing for what is now visibly a bogus scare
This has got to be THE most expensive NON-PROBLEM situation that has ever come down the pike. It’s all made possible by a bunch of stupid, lazy, naive print and TV “journalists”, who run cover for all these charlatans and fraudsters…
It’s the ill-informed leading the gullible and naive down the garden path…to the poor house.
For those of you who are not caught up in an anti-New York Times hysteria, Tom Friedman has a cogent article.

He be as dumb as you…Now we know where you get yo’ talkin points…Mass transit indeed.
If he said “gimme some nukes, along with gettin’ our own oil, use all the NatGas we have here” then I take him seriously……no, this dummy sez he wants more windmill and solar panels …Another out to lunch Algore worshiper…
