If you don’t have amnesia, you can remember that Republicans controlled Congress and the White House for 6 years prior to 2007. If they knew how to solve the health care mess, what stopped them from doing it? Where were all those ideas you mention then? Well?

And he’s now willing to meet with Republicans to hear their ideas after they’ve been sitting in congress with everything on paper for more than seven whole months??????????

My advice to Republicans: Just say, “ HellNoand FO”…We’re not getting our fingerprints on this mess…If you think it’s so teriffic, you’ve got the numbers, we can’t stop you….

Good point. Republicans keep telling us that the solution to the health care mess is that individual Americans must become “smart consumers” when it comes to health care. Governor Tim Pawlenty, who will be a candidate for the Republican nomination in 2012, just wrote a column for the Washington Post saying exactly that last week.

So what does that mean? It means it’s all on you. If you want to know what you are getting in return for your premium, you need to get a complete copy of the policy and read through it as many times as it takes to understand what’s covered and what’s not. Otherwise, you could find yourself in the ER being told that some med or test they want to give you is not covered by your policy. One of the joys of a privatized system.

If she ask me, I’d tell her to take the $400 and purchase a $2500.deductible policy, available from Blue Cross in CA, …I see here, fo’ her age and life style, safe sex and all, it’s $129. a mo.!!!..
Take the remainder and save it so she could pay fo’ routine procedures on her own, gettin the best deal from doctors she know…
But she didn’t ask me, a poor undereducated Black woman fro Detrolit…

In your place, I would also go online and get quotes from several insurers, like Humana and Aetna, for an individual policy. One of the advantages of getting a group policy through your employer is that it may not matter if you have a pre-existing condition. If you’re young and have no history of serious illness, then that advantage is not important to you, and it is likely other insurers will offer you some individual policies with a monthly premium less than $400. The amount of the premium will depend on the deductible and on the coverage of each policy. Again, you must take the trouble to find out exactly what is covered and what is not. For example, if you’re hurt in an accident or get food poisoning and you have to be taken to an ER for emergency treatment, what part of that treatment is covered and what is not? Are all the medications you get in the ER covered? If they have to keep you in the hospital, how many days of hospitalization are covered? Only when you get coverage details on one or more policies can you compare them and figure out which is the better value.

Start by reading the Blue Cross policy – either your employer or a co-worker should be able to give you a copy. It should explain exactly what is and is not covered in each situation. I know it’s quite a chore, but that is part of living in a country where the health insurance system is privatized.
