Napolitano statement warrants investigation

That Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, could claim that airline security worked following the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day should be viewed as more of an issue than the failed terrorist attack itself.

How could the secretary of homeland security be so badly informed? What if this had been a situation where her active involvement was needed and she was this ignorant of the situation?

Napolitano has backtracked from her statement according to The New York Times. That is not enough. Americans need to know how she could have ever come to say such a foolish thing, and we need facts to justify her ability to handle her position after such a display of ignorance.

What failure within her department, or failure of character, led to this statement? No, the “taken out of context,” doesn’t work here. Either Napolitano or her department made an error understanding what had occurred, or someone was in serious denial. Barring some unexpected revelation, I don’t believe that the attempted attack itself is a failure that is specifically a fault of the Obama administration or of Homeland Security. But somewhere either the workings of the department failed Napolitano by allowing her to make such a statement, or a culture of CYA or just plain ego is at work. This is unacceptable.
