Socialism, Marxism, and Communism are forms of cruelty

When I read, and re-read how delegates at the Copenhagen climate change conference broke into applause at Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez’s attack on capitalism my strongest reaction has nothing to do with climate change nor the wealth transfer that motivated so much of the conference. I am appalled at the cruelty of those delegates. I am still, days later, astounded at the utter inhumanity of people that would burst into applause in support of an economic and political system noted for shortages, long lines, and tyrants like Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and Castro.

What those people applauded for was a political class that could keep the masses in check, in gray uniforms, gray housing, and educated to not question but to meet the needs of the state. It was applause for the old Soviet Union, the former East Germany, the KGB, the Stasi, and the Gulag. It was a denunciation of the human potential to rise, to soar, and to achieve success, to lift oneself out of poverty and to lend a helping hand to friend and family. The applause was acceptance that there must be a privileged political class, a special class of people to rule over and keep excellence in check when it is not for the state, and to reward mediocrity, even sloth when the state chooses.

To the people all over the world that read this blog, in socialist nations and in nations like the U.S. that are rapidly moving toward becoming socialist societies, I have to ask, do you not see in yourself and the people around you the ability to rise, to soar, and to achieve success?

I know that capitalism is far from perfect, but is the answer to problems of capitalism the denunciation of the best in human nature and human potential? Did the delegates that cheered for Chavez really desire to purge people of the opportunity to lift themselves up to a better life? Did those delegates believe that the world would be a better place if more governments possessed the power to use force to keep their citizenry in line? Did those that cheered really believe that it is better to live in a world where disagreeing with those in power means prison, even death?

Because that folks is what Socialism, Marxism, and Communism really mean. These systems marry the economic and political sectors of a society, thus placing enormous power in the hands of the government. Human nature and history prove the truth that power corrupts and the power of Socialist and Communists government corrupts absolutely. If the ruling class finds favor with you then all is good for you. If the ruling class decides not to show you favor or simply does a poor job of ruling, your life is bad. There are no options under that sort of rule unless those in power grant options or the appearance of options. You either gain favor with those in power or you languish.

As DougRoss@Journal challenges in an Open Letter to Marxists:

So, is your end game merely a compromise? – accepting dictatorship and the enormous police state necessary to prevent the citizenry from trying to improve their individual circumstances. And then there’s the problem of production incentives, including forced labor, because of the unsustainable economic (un-)dynamic created by communism when individuals cannot profit from their own labor.

The answer to capitalism’s faults is to teach the values of education, self reliance, and accomplishment because individuals under freedom have the best lives, the best chance to better themselves, and the greatest potential to solve the world’s problems. Applause for tyrants like Chavez is simply cruelty to those less fortunate; the masses trapped in all powerful states.

You know nothing December 21, 2009 at 2:23 pm

You know nothing of socialism, capitalism, communism and Marxism! America is going to collapse due to your democracy which is a controlled by the super-rich.

JUNO December 21, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I don’t know about the rest of you but I would rather be “controlled” by a bunch of “super-rich” CAPITALISTS then by the likes of the power hungry demagogues mentioned in the post.

Included under the broad banner of Socialism is also the labour movement in Western democracies, both political and industrial, which was born out of Marxism, and which has ensured unprecedented levels of minimum subsistence for workers and a rising middle class. To denounce Socialism wholesale is to denounce an integral part of modern Western civiilsation, which has tamed capitalism to the extent that it is acceptable to most classes.

WOW !! What clear thinking! I believe we found a leader for the Animal Farm…

Captain Picard December 21, 2009 at 4:38 pm

The banner on the top of this page promotes “critical thinking in politics” yet the author displays nothing of the sort in this article. The author assums that all socilist governments and socities are run and will be run by tyrants with a gulag. In the hight of Stalin’s terror there were some 2 million prisoners in the gulag system. The U.S. has about 2.6 million in prison. The author states that capitilism brings about the best in “human nature”. I ask the author do you really think the bailing out of large banks and other institutions with tax payer dollars, the exploitation of the working class, the utter disregard for pupblic education and the current purpetual wars in the middle east is the best that humanity has to author? The author has done nothing more than rant and rave on a political system that he clearly knows nothing about and draws erroneous conclusions from logical phalicies.

Not quite where to start with this guy. You Captain Piacard have thrown alot out there, but be that as it may, my real concern is the thinking that 2 million , mostly innocent political prisoners, being held in “GULAGS” around the world and thru history, is the same as 2 million US prisoners , who have had their day in court, with a lawyer at taxpayer expense, and now get to do the time for the crime… See any difference?? and you may want to hit “SPELL-CHECK” prior to posting, unless you’re Canadian, then we understand…

Good post Robert…Glad to see you take a stand against these bankrupt ideologies, that create poverty, misery, and hardship everywhere they take hold.

I always find it amazing when people in our own country, sing the praises Communism/Socialism/Marxism/Statism. But should I expect differently when one looks at who we have elected king… ObamayoMama…

Warren Carnell December 21, 2009 at 11:38 pm

Much of my time every day is spent thinking of ways to get thru to the members of the “great unwashed”(Obamatons), people in this country/ world who mistakenly believe that socialism is a viable alternative to Conservative Capitalism. I think it breaks down to this….If you socialists want a big government, then it only follows that you should be in favor of a vibrant private sector that makes it possible, for without the dynamic private sector to pay the bills, then at some time in the future the burden of debt from printing money will crush the fragile economy and we will be the US of Zimbabwe …

Lynn December 22, 2009 at 10:37 am

I’m sure the right wing is sending Chavez a fruit basket today. So now Obama is a pinko-commie if he cares about the environment.

I think you’re in danger of violating one of your own rules here by resorting to polarizing language. So we have to choose between unchecked capitalism and Stalin’s gulags? A social safety net can make sure we have a workforce ready to drive our economy. Social Security got older workers out of the workforce so younger folks (the kind perhaps to take to the streets) would be able to find work more readily. Public schools could be considered socialist, are they OK? Or do only those able to pay for private schools get an education in self-reliance? Where do our plucky entrepreneurs come from then?

I absolutely agree that we have to be careful to keep our socialism in check so that we don’t spend ourself into oblivion, but we need checks on capitalism, too. Corporations don’t care about the people (Their job is money for stockholders–I have no issue here.) and only the best care about future sustainability even of their own businesses (witness S&L crisis, Enron, mortage crisis…) let alone the planet. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory is an example of what happens when profit is the only goal.

Hiplanesdrifter December 22, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Glad to see you are no longer calling yourself Captain Picard and making sooo much more sense. I’m sure “Bob” just throws up his hands when he reads your comments. (I actually don’t think he’s reading much anymore. Has to interview at the “ThinkTanks”…)

1st… We don’t need to send fruit baskets to the likes of Chavez..We should all oppose everything he stands for and refuse any oil from his country.

2nd…Polarizing language is usually accurate language. If you call a Marxist demagogue a Socialist, well that’s kind….

3rd…Public schools (socialist madrasas) are generally a mess and need to be closed for the benefit of society. All the teachers unions disbanded and the leaders jailed for sedition, crimes against society, and misappropriation of funds. And, yes, Lynn, self-reliance automatically becomes part of the education process when principles consistent with The Golden Rule and 10 Commandants are taught.

4th… I’m not sure where you get this idea that business does NOT care about anything but profits. Sure, you can point to Enron and other big outfits (EXXON), that went against the public good. But they are the exception, certainly not the rule. When you have competition, if you don’t like the way a company operates, you can go elsewhere.

5th…I’m not familiar with the Triangle PantyWaist Factory, but I’m sure they did not operate by Golden Rule Capitalism…

6th…Have a great Holiday!!

Lynn December 22, 2009 at 10:28 pm

And, 6: You, too. Happy Holidays!

Lynn December 22, 2009 at 6:34 pm

1: you missed the point.

2. You’re opinion. Everybody’s entitled to one, but on the right and left people have been caught bein polarizing to an insincere degree. Obama’s a nazi, really? He’s a nazi and a communist?? And the anti-christ?

3. (see #2). So we close all the public schools and then what happens? Who teaches this golden rule? The US plummets to the bottom of the developed world in education of its workers (even faster than we already are).

4. I look to incentives. There’s nothing wrong with the profit motive, but pure capitalism can’t accomplish everything. Capitalism results in overfishing, overfertilizing crops (which means those downstream have to drink bottled water), over cutting foests, and, yes, exploiting workers. In our society of political checks and balances we need government to balance the power of business, mostly big, but small as well.

5. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a touchstone for the labor movement. Workers were locked inside, because it was more profitable for the owners. Unfortunately there was a fire and most of the workers died. I’m not saying close all the factories, but a nice OSHA inspector every now and then helps with these things if you can stand the possibility that we’ll go back to living in caves (although it hasn’t happened in 100 years).

Marty Bernard December 22, 2009 at 8:19 pm

The Triangle was in 1911…I think working conditions and attitudes torward the hired-hands have changed somewhat in 100 years… And now the fire dept has really tall ladders…

Oh LYNN, did you hear hear about liberal firestorm that hit Detroit 50 years ago??…….Too bad there’s no brakes on the Liberal Express.then……………………. Check it out the latest on PJ TV.com…..It’s my Christmas present to you….Bye Bye..

Lynn December 23, 2009 at 10:33 am

Yes, things are better in the workplace because of public outcry, the labor movement, and government oversight–and police and city governments are much better at crowd control and dealing with demonstrations. None of these things was accomplished by capitalistic concerns, nor would they be. Government needs to do the things only it can do.

Marty Bernard December 24, 2009 at 12:32 am

But did you watch the PJTV.com segment on De-troit??? It’s fascinating, illuminating, and my gift to you..You’re not allowed to comment further until you do….Merry Merry…Bye Bye..
