Happy Thanksgiving, happy Black Friday, and happy start of this Christmas and holiday season

This piece started as something about Black Friday and the extreme commercialism that will immediately follow Thanksgiving and go beyond Christmas. I was going to write that commercialism is not what Thanksgiving and its immediate aftermath should be about.

Then I realized that isn’t right. The United States is about freedom and commerce. The Founding Fathers believed in the importance of trade. Commerce was good and to be valued in the new world. We need to remember that fact and that what begins tomorrow, the wild, crassly commercial period of the American calendar is in fact a great thing. It means jobs and income and that means food, paying the bills, and even health care to many people.

Happy Thanksgiving, happy Black Friday, and happy start of this Christmas and holiday season to all of my readers.
