As I mentioned in my post yesterday, last week I learned that I will be laid off at the end of the year. I am now looking for a new job.
One of the first questions I was asked by a reader was; now that I am looking for a job, have I had changed my mind on Obama’s health care reform and economic stimulus plans?
No, and No. I still oppose both. Now more than before.
I would rather the government work at getting out of the way of the economy than attempt to help. The help is hurting.
Health care needs to be reformed. I have believed that for years. However, that reform has to be well thought out. The Democratic proposals are not well thought out. The Democrats have given us few reasons to believe that their plans will help the average American, but plenty of reasons to expect their reforms will draw down the nation’s wealth. I want the government to allow competition not attempt to be part of the competition.
And as for the economic stimulus plan? The plan was supposed to keep unemployment down by providing a jump start to the economy. Unfortunately the stimulus plan that was supposed to be a trickle-up stimulus plan was really a Reagan era trickle-down plan laden with pork barrel spending. It is logical to believe that the employment numbers would be a lot better today had the President given us an across the board tax cut instead of the pork barrel so-called stimulus.
Unemployment should make us want less government because government actions always have a cost. Right now that cost is our high unemployment numbers; a number I am about to join.

Your position makes sense if you could have a world where government would get out of everybody’s business and, I guess the natural altruism ensues to make sure that society doesn’t crumble under the weight of poverty, environmental disaster, and illness. But since the government is already regulating and susidizing, wouldn’t it be better to try to help them come up with things that make sense. Yours is a principled stance, but I want to be pragmatic. You’ll pay for quality healthcare for you and your family so people won’t have to pay higher insurance premiums to support you, but what about those who don’t?
I know you’ll be on to bigger and better…
