The Cap and Trade legislation that Congress may vote on today sounds more like we should call it, Cap our economy and Trade our jobs legislation.
I don’t think I created the Cap our economy line but I don’t remember where I heard it (Brett?). Congress is going to consider Cap and Trade legislation, the Waxman-Markey bill, as early as today. Neither Congress nor the voters are ready. The bill is said to be more than 1,200 pages long, and was released from committee Monday, apparently with updates later this week. That means that members of Congress, the media, and the public, have had less than five business days to read, review, and think about this bill.
This bill needs to be stalled. There are far too many unanswered questions for our nation to commit to something like Cap and Trade which is facing serious, significant difficulties everywhere it is being used.
Democratic Congressmen are already turning Cap and Trade into another effort to buy their own reelection by working for changes in the bill to protect their own constituencies, according to the Wall Street Journal.
One of my biggest concerns has been the estimates of the cost per household that are in the neighborhood of $3,000 – $5,000 per year. To my relief (very temporary relief) the Congressional Budget Office released a study showing that in 2020 the average household cost for Waxman-Markey will only be about $175 a year. That’s not bad. Unfortunately, it’s also a truckload of politician manipulated BS (or perhaps because of this data we need to substitute the word Bull in BS for Politician – It is a bunch of PS).
The CBO’s report is not flawed, it’s the way the story has been covered that is PS. The Caps in Cap and Trade, and therefore the cost applied in the early years, are relatively light and won’t dramatically increase until after 2020, according to the Wall Street Journal. Studying the costs for the year 2020 and only that year, is therefore meaningless for anything but that one year, and further flawed because long range estimates are little more than educated guesses. What is worse is that the CBO states in a footnote that their cost estimates don’t include the impacts to GDP. That’s like quoting a pitcher’s ERA but excluding homeruns.
Even the New York Times, one of the nations most important and influential newspapers couldn’t help abusing the CBO study in an editorial today.
If supporters want to pass a Cap and Trade bill they should do it by using facts. What we have today is garbage and the bill’s supporters should be ashamed. They are pushing some of the most impactful legislation in U.S. history with half truths and outright lies.
Environmental issues are far too critical to humanity to be treated with such disdain for the truth. Stall this bill, hold intelligent debate, then vote. If it passes it will be far more effective having been handled through legitimate means than if it is put in place deceitfully leaving those of us paying the costs knowing the costs are were more about reelection buying than environmental protection.

Obama’s ACES Act (cap and trade) will cost us much, much more than $3,000 – $5,000 per year! It will cost many of us our businesses. It will cost many of us our jobs. It will cost all of us our freedoms and our future.
No patriotic and informed American can support the ACES Act (global warming/cap and trade scam), a huge Ponzy scheme that will kill the U.S. economy.
Cap and Trade “would be the equivalent of an atomic bomb directed at the U.S. economy—all without any scientific justification,” says famed climatologist Dr. S. Fred Singer. It would significantly increase taxes and the cost of energy, forcing many companies to close, thus increasing unemployment, poverty and dependence.
Cap and trade represents huge taxes and cost increases, which will hurt mostly the poor and the middle class while further empowering and enriching Obama and his fraudulent billionaire friends (Gore, Soros, Goldman Sachs, Obama’s Chicago Climate Exchange friends, GE, the United Nations, etc.)– all at our expense and at the expense of our children and grandchildren.
More than 30,000 American scientists have signed onto a petition that states, “There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.” http://www.petitionproject.org
Those brainwashed to the point of wanting to destroy the economy to “prevent global warming” are behaving like the most primitive human beings who were duped into believing that human sacrifices would ensure them good weather. Human beings don’t have the power to control climate! And killing the economy will not help the environment. Poor countries can’t protect the environment. Just look at Haiti!
Please do what you can to defend your family and your country. Write to your representatives and ask them to defend us from Obama’s criminal scheme — https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
I faxed, emailed and called my congressman yesterday about Cap and Trade. I live in Texas and our congressman is a demo
Anyway, when I called his offices yesterday they told me that he was getting a lot of pressure and it looks like he will NOT vote for it.
There is one thing that I keep drilling into these politicians, is that if they don’t have time to read the damn bill, don’t vote on it!! The Obama administration is using what I’ll call political terrorism in that they are doing whatever they can to scare the public into thinking that the their fix needs to be implemented right now! No matter what and we’ll worry about the details later. Humm, I don’t think so.
This president, I’m afraid to say is just a down right liar!! Put pressure on congress to stop this madness. Remember, you work for me and your job performance is being evaluated by the American people right now. Looks to me that most of you will NOT be working for us come election time next year.
I don’t recall if was me that showed you an article with that line (maybe from the CFO.com article from a few weeks ago?). But thanks for the props.
It’s freaking outrageous that every Obama bill is “important” and must be passed “immediately”. The amount of pages and amendments is massive; there’s just no way a senator or congressperson (note the PC annotation!) can digest that material, even with their staff working 24 hours a day and the other things they have on their plates (bribes, kickbacks, er, i mean pork and earmarks). There’s an interesting website called readthebill.org, that’s trying to lobby for posting legislation for 72 hours on-line before it comes up for vote. I think that’s not enough time for the Ameican public to be informed. Just look at what happened with the so-called Stimulus Bill (HR 1). It’s yet another Obama promise that he’s breaking.
So they’ll impose this cap and trade bill on our energy industry. Last time I read this thing, the majority of funds generated from this thing will go to social programs, not to improving our energy structures and energy independence. Another tax, upon other taxes and waste of tax money (hello “cash for clunkers”, latest example).
Of course the MSM won’t cover this, just as they usually ignore negative things about Obama (latest example – nothing about his heathcare infomercial on ABC the other night, where he made some seriously bad statements about healthcare for elders, amongst others).
The Dems should be happy that MJ died….it’s all over the news and will keep this to a minimum.
Apparently, in yet another magic act worthy of David Copperfield, a 300-page addendum was just slipped into the bill last night. No time to read it – intelligently, at least. Don’t insult us all by hiring a speed reader.
I, too called & wrote to my representatives in the house & senate. My congressman is a lost cause. I only hope that there are enough votes against it in the senate for a filibuster.
The audacity and hubris of this administration is astounding – and terrifying.
Obama’s job’s killing, economy killing bill passed!
Obama’s Cap and trade is another giant step towards Marxism — and the corruption, poverty, enslavement, destruction and despair that Marxism entails.
Obama is working much faster than Hugo Chavez at imposing Marxism. No wonder the Russians are gloating:
From Pravda: “…the American descent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people…” http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/107459-american_capitalism-0
We are NOT hapless sheeple! We’ll do whatever is necessary to defend ourselves and our children from the Marxist dictatorship that’s being set up in Washington.
Robert, you’re assuming that congress is capable of intelligent debate and critical thinking. The cosponsors of the bill admittedly had not read the bill. I highly doubt many other representatives took the time to read it, either.
99% of our elected representatives in congress are prostitutes and nothing more. They will shove this stinking pile of feces down our throats. After 100 million Americans get their first ugly electric bill, there will be hell to pay. I only with it would be in the form of a bloody revolution for the immoral crimes congress has committed. The bailout was just beginning. In the past 12 months, and if this bill is passed, congress will have screwed Americans out of a YEAR’S worth of GDP. What the HELL are we doing about it? Most Americans are tuned in to see who’s winning American Idol.
Pathetic.
Well Wendy, our congressman here, too, is beyond hope. The interests of our congressman, his political views, and his past legislative actions are so opposed to the way most people feel that it’s unacceptable. But they can only blame themselves, because when it’s voting time, only the welfare recipients show up in great percentages.
What’s wrong with an attempt to reduce waste and pollution? I support a carbon tax over a cap and trade system and I’d rather see us eliminate the billions of annual direct subsidies we give to coal, oil and gas before enacting a cap and trade. BUT, I don’t hear the radical right saying anything other than “the status quo is OK.” Well, unless our heads are in the sand and you don’t care about the next generation, the status quo is not OK.
Tim,
Please read the article again, then read the article on this site from yesterday on Cap and Trade.
The issue is that this is happening way too fast without opponents or proponents having time to analyze this bill. This is enormously impactful legislation that appears to be nothing more than another effort at insuring encumbents get re-elected; why are democrats already working to protect their constituencies? Handle this bill openly. Know what this bill says. Analyze the impacts. Then vote. Not before.
Exactly said, Robert.
Justin,
Is it too much to ask that they read and study something before voting on it? Why is it always a rush with this group?
You know we could reduce waste and pollution by going back to the stone age, but I don’t think many would enjoy living like that. I agree we should clean up the pollution, but could there possibly be a way without crippling the economy further?
Sorry, Justin, I meant Tim.
No problem Nancy. Unfortunately for all Americans, this legislation passed. Unfortunately as well, many experts have said that this bill will NOT reduce CO2 in a meaningful way. All of this boils down to penalizing the citizens for NOT having alterantive energy solutions ready the second GOD OBAMA took office.
This is a bill that is designed to make Goldman Sachs money. Would any of you be surprised to see Goldman be placed in charge of brokering these fees or providing expensive consulting services to the Department of Agritculture? It’s a damned SCAM and the leftists have their heads so far up their collective asses that they can’t see it.
This is NOT the first cap and trade system. A smiliar system in Europe has FAILED to meaningfully reduce CO2. Yet we continue, at full speed, to follow their failures.
The state of common sense in the world is scary. The US is fastly becoming a banana republic.
Please help us to slow this process down and force our elected officials to do their jobs. Sign the petition at http://www.ReadTheDamnBill.com
