I have been a fan of Newt Gingrich for years, more because he seems to scare Republicans about as much as he scares Democrats, than for any actual political views. From my anti-Democrat and anti-Republican point of view, Gingrich shakes things up and that’s good.

Not this time though.

His accusation that Sotomayor is a racist and that her comment was racist went too far. He stated that himself today in his newsletter.

I am glad he has written this in his newsletter. Gingrich, and others, have legitimate concerns about Sotomayor’s qualifications for the Supreme Court. He will have a much better chance of persuading Democratic senators, the only people that matter now, using calm, rational, reasoning based on his exceptional intellect. Persuasion works that way.

Folks, we have to get past the name calling as part of our political dialogue. I urge you to read my April 20 post for more on this. We have spent trillions of dollars on an economic rescue package that basically offers up our children as collateral, Iran is on the verge of going nuclear, and North Korea is on the verge of God only knows what with its nukes and missiles. We have to get past the name calling and hold rational, fact-based, intellectual debates if we are going to solve these problems.

A well informed electorate strengthens our Constitution and therefore our nation. You can’t inform your opponents if you’re screaming at them or calling them names. We need get past that and debate, intelligently.
