Two of the biggest stories today are not connected in any obvious way. Yet, they are directly connected.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling released a report Wednesday questioning the value of SAT test preparation courses. I find it interesting that this report was released on the same day that American Idol (or should it be American Idle??) announced its big winner.

I’ll give you one guess as to which subject is more important to more Americans.

I have a plan to help you improve your children’s SAT scores. It is a plan that will work far better than any known test prep program on the planet. Are you ready? Do you have something to take notes with? I am going to give you my two step secret below:

1. Turn off your television(s).
2. Give up the American Idle / pop culture, movie star, athlete fantasies.

Folks, education and intellect are just not respected in our culture. That’s a shame. If you doubt me, ask any school teacher and you will hear myriad stories of parents that don’t emphasize education to their children. Yet, you will find plenty of parents that emphasize athletics (yes, I know, your kid is going to get that scholarship!) and spend their evenings glued to television’s Idol, Bachelor and Bachelorette, or half a dozen other silly programs.

Television, the drug of the Nation, Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation… (Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy).

The value of SAT test prep programs is not relevant to this article. The example that parents set for their children is very relevant. You will do far more for your children, and far more for our nation, if you establish a culture of learning and accomplishments in your household.

A well informed electorate strengthens our Constitution and therefore our nation.

Turn off the television, read a book, take an online course or pick out a video lecture from the public library. If your children see you learning a little bit every day they will grow to respect their education. That is SAT preparation.

BRAVO! KUDOS! HOORAY! THREE CHEERS!
I feel like I have been saying this for years; so happy to find a kindred spirit!

There is a lot of truth in what you say, Robert. Great job.

No TV in my house until each of my three children has done something to become healthier (exercise), a better student (homework and outside reading), and more creative (coloring, playing outside, etc.).
