To the Mothers and Wives of Bloggers

by Robert S. Siegel on May 10, 2009

I grew up privileged. Not wealthy in the sense of a mansion and servants. Wealthy in the sense that being born into a middle class American household means I started life better off than most people on the planet. Combine this definition of wealth with two parents that remained married, were hard working and decent people that placed great importance on raising me and my two sisters. That is a better definition of “Privilege,” than the more common concept of privilege meaning rich.

My mother put up with the typical stuff from her three kids, except that two of us ended up living far away. I used to think that having us far away, especially now that we all have kids, was the hardest. I know that being far away on Mother’s Day is hard for me. Now I think that my adult political views, the views that led to this blog, may be the hardest thing she’s ever put up with. I think that she has nearly put me up for adoption a few times because of my politics (not a bad deal really – full grown, master’s degree, married with instant grandchildren!). With all that, she still answers my calls – most of the time.

Thank you Mom.

Then there is my wife.

She has kept laughing through this first month of my launching this blog. That can’t be easy. I have a computer permanently attached to my fingers so that I can write and research almost constantly. Yet she keeps smiling and even helping to get the word out.

All this and she is a great mother to our kids. So great that she makes me a far better father than I might otherwise be.

I love you.

And what a dog house I would be in if I didn’t give a special shout-out to my mother-in law. No jokes here. This great lady was my biggest fan back when I first met my wife even though I had no job and was from out of town; an unknown. All she cared about was that I made her daughter happy.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you. And thank you.
