The U.S. is far from perfect. From slavery to testing nukes on Pacific Islands (we moved entire civilizations and wrecked their cultures in the process) our nation has done some rotten things. You could make a career out of cataloging those rotten things. People have.
As the torture memos continue to make news and cause people to question our standing, I decided to give you some examples of why I believe in the MYODB principle number 2, which includes, “We started out separate and different and need to remain separate and different; not enough has improved over there for us to change.”
While the U.S. is far from perfect, we strive to improve. In fact, with the exception of a handful of extremists, most Americans want our nation to do the right things, be friendly to nations friendly to us, ensure equal rights before the law, and basically allow others to live their lives in freedom, security, and peace. And yes, I include in that your, “Socialist left-wing nut job,” neighbor and that “Right-wing fascist,” your forced to listen to at work everyday. We all basically want what’s good. We just disagree a lot on how to do it.
It is with all of this in mind; our imperfect past, torture memos, and the overall desire to do what is right, that I wanted to point out some examples of why we need to remain separate and how not enough has changed over there. See the links at the end of this column.
If you have time, click on a few of the links and read the stories. You’ll find interesting reading and you’ll be glad you live here. You may be inspired to do more to make “Here,” better. If you don’t have the time to read further, just read the headlines. That will be enough for me to make my point.
Note that the first five examples are from stories that were posted Thursday or Friday. I didn’t have to hunt at all. They were waiting for me on a news site I frequent. The remaining stories I found in less than five minutes of searching. It’s just too easy. God Bless America.
