The woman, wearing pajamas, approached the driver's side door and was talking to the driver, reported the Star Tribune. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Justine Damond through the driver's side door.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, a Minneapolis Police Department spokesman tells PEOPLE.
Justine Damond was shot and killed by an officer Saturday.
Justine's bio on the website says she was "originally trained as a Veterinary Surgeon". "I have numerous same questions and it is why we immediately asked for an external and independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting death".
Department policy requires officers to wear body cameras any time they could "reasonably anticipate" that they will need to record an incident. Australian outlets are posting news about the shooting, and her fiancé, Don Damond, is also gaining attention on Facebook after the fatal incident.
Justine Damond (40) formerly of Sydney, died in Minneapolis at about 11.30pm on Saturday after two officers responded to a report of a possible assault. "I know the neighborhood well". USA and Australian media gave her age as 40.
Justine Damond's stepson Zach Damond said in a Facebook video he released on Monday morning, that he "demands answers" from the police for what he described as unprovoked violence.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy.
"She believed we have more power over our circumstances - even our genes - than we have been taught", Davis-Suggs said.
CNN reports that Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the Damond family.
"I've asked for the investigation to be expedited to provide transparency and to answer as many questions as quickly as we can", Harteau said. Investigators were still trying to determine whether other video exists. One of the friends said, "This woman was a attractive light, she was a healer, she was loved, she should be alive".
