Scalise was fielding balls at second base when he was hit in the hip, and sustained grievous injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.
US lawmakers returned to regular business on Thursday and prepared to play their annual charity baseball game, one day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition.
Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against United States president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers. Two lawmakers who were leaving practice when they encountered Hodgkinson before the shooting believe he was targeting Republicans.
Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time". "But for now, the members of the congressional baseball team have made the decision to go forward with tonight's game, which will be played for charity".
"We are encouraged in the improvement in his condition in the last 36 hours", Sava said.
The baseball game has been a Washington tradition since 1909.
Ticket sales picked up after Wednesday's shooting, eventually setting an attendance record, the organizers said, as attendees such as Alexander Hilten, 16, of Arlington, Virginia, chose to come to the game for the first time.
Played nearly every year since 1909, this year's congressional contest began with a moving tribute to the victims of the shooting, as well as the Capitol Police officers who helped take out the gunman. Republicans and Democrats play one another in annual event, which raises funds for charity.

It appears that Scalise, his Republican colleagues and others, who were practicing for a charity baseball game, were targeted by a man - who died from his own wounds - who disagreed with Republicans' positions.
"They saved a lot of lives", the president said.
Richmond and others in both parties say Scalise will be at the top of their minds.
