District 9 was originally conceived as the short film, "Alive in Joburg". Enter: Oats Studios, Blomkamp's indie production company that aims to churn out some unique properties delivered to you, the viewing audience, in a most modern way. Promoted as a "series of experiemental short films", Oats Studios Volume 1 is hopefully just the first of many planned shorts from Blomkamp's studio. The District 9 and Elysium director released a trailer for some of the studio's upcoming projects, which will be released to Steam in the next couple of months. Both Blomkamp and M. Night Shyamalan had incendiary directorial debuts that, despite being ostensibly genre films, managed to reinvent their respective genres in exciting ways, Shyamalan with horror and Blomkamp with science fiction. Known as Oats Studios "Volume 1," these films aren't coming to the art-house cinema or even YouTube.
Check out the teaser trailer, which shows Dakota Fanning greeting the aliens with extreme prejudice and Sigourney Weaver giving combat orders. The voiceover in the trailer hauntingly explains, "We were once mankind, we were humanity, they came here to exterminate us ... a new world altered everyone".
According to comments made by Blomkamp on his Twitter account, the director has been toying with the idea of distributing the shorts via Steam, though has since stated that Volume 1 "could be entirely free", with YouTube used as a platform. "Adapt or die. It was a simple as that".
Check out the Oats Studios website for... well, not MUCH more information, but presumably there will be more details there soon.
