Eid: How is the start of the Muslim festival determined?

Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in Kohat on Monday with the rest of the country.

Some scholars believe that the u-ran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during the month, making it particularly holy. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) follows guidance from the Fiqh Council of North America, which relies on astronomical calculations of the moon sighting in Mecca, the city in Saudi Arabia that is considered the birthplace of Islam.

Eid marks the start of Shawwal, which begins with a feast to end the period of fasting.

Further south, Lakemba has proven once again to be a popular destination for Muslims to gather to break the fast together.

Same was the scene in other markets of districts like Baramulla, Anantnag, Sopian and others where people were seen busy in buying essentials for Eid celebrations.

"I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters on the auspicious occasion of this year's Eid-el-Fitri celebrations". The June 26 dinner will not only be open to students and non-students and Muslims and non-Muslims, it will also emphasize interculturalism, with speeches, presentations and videos from Muslims from all over the world. Many will wake up early to pray at mosque or outdoor prayer venue.

Countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh started observing fast from May 28 this year. Depending on the sighting of the moon, the dates for Eid can vary across the world and change from year to year.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the two biggest festivals in the Islamic tradition and it is just around the corner.

General secretary Saiyad Hussain in a release said - "If the new moon is sighted EID-UL-FITR will Insha-Allah be celebrated on Monday 26th June, 2017, otherwise on Tuesday 27th June, 2017".

Traditionally, Eid celebration is a public holiday in many Muslim-majority countries. And for those who aren't, hopefully your Muslim friends will bring some barakatjies (Eid leftovers) for you the next day. "Eid Mubarak" is exchanged by each and every individual in the form of greetings.
