The Illinois man identified as the suspected gunman behind a shooting that left a congressman and multiple others wounded in Virginia Wednesday had multiple run-ins with police, including one incident in March, authorities said.

Callers to 911 reported hearing roughly 50 shots in the area, about the same number of shots many said they heard in Wednesday's shooting.
"This could be the first political rhetorical terrorist attack", Illinois Republican Rep. Rodney Davis, who was at the practice, told CNN's Brianna Keilar Wednesday morning before Hodgkinson had been publicly identified as the alleged shooter. "Sanders said he was 'sickened by this despicable act" and condemned it "in the strongest possible terms".
When News 4 crews arrived at the home, which is located on a private gravel road on Rolling Hills Lane, a neighbor said they hadn't seen Hodgkinson in months but that his wife still lived at the residence.
None of that stopped some conservatives from concluding that Hodgkinson was aiming to injure Republicans specifically, and that he was driven by a liberal culture that glorifies violence against GOPers. According to the court clerk, the charges were dismissed in November of that year. Scalise is undergoing surgery at a Washington, D.C., hospital.
Capitol Police said officers who were part of Scalise's security detail returned fire and wounded the shooter, who was taken into custody.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy", Trump said in a statement.

Trump confirmed during a White House address that Hodgkinson died following injuries he incurred from a shootout with Capitol Police on the scene. "We are with her and with the entire Scalise family". Scalise was listed in stable condition, according to the president.
