Former world motorcycling champion Nicky Hayden was in "extremely critical" condition on Thursday following a serious bicycle accident which left him with brain damage, as his fiancée and mother kept a vigil at his bedside.

Doctors placed the 2006 MotoGP champion into a medically induced coma, the BBC reported.

Hayden's fiance Jackie, his brother Tommy, and mother Rose have also arrived in Italy to be by his side in these hard moments.

Valentino Rossi said: "It's a great shame because Nicky is a great rider for sure, a great talent, a world champion and always at the top, but especially a very good guy".

He spent a further nine years in MotoGP racing with Ducati and the Aspar team before making a switch to the Superbike series and now rides for the Red Bull Honda World Suberbike Team. In the MotoGP, he ran 218 Grand Prix races with three wins and 28 podium places. The incident occurred in eastern Italy after his cycle collided with a vehicle. "For Nicky, we're all with you", the Italian MotoGP legend added.

The dangers of training on public roads have been highlighted in recent weeks by other accidents affecting professional athletes.
