TLC Could Soon Force Uber to Provide Tipping Option

Uber doesn't technically discourage tipping, but, unlike Lyft, the company also doesn't allow you to leave a gratuity via the app.

The New York move suggests that car-ride services are unlikely to remain free from digital tipping.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has chose to move ahead with a proposal that could (if implemented) force cab aggregators to offer options for tipping, regardless o the kind of payment they accept.

While some people said they have chose to take out their own cars to office, others said they would board the Metro. That app also charges a 25% commission but includes a tipping option.

While the call for strike by taxi drivers was given by the Sarvodaya Drivers' Association (SDA), some autorickshaw unions said they would show solidarity by protesting. Lyft started offering in-app tipping in 2012, and the company says its drivers have pulled in $200 million in tips since.

"Uber has been stubbornly unwilling to give our riders an easy option to tip", the petition said.

"We have not seen the proposal and look forward to reviewing it", an Uber spokesperson said in a statement. "My hope is that drivers in other cities across the country will come together" to demand better treatment from Uber.

The recommended fine for alleged violations is believed to mark the first such citation issued against the San Francisco-based ride-hailing network or its competitors since the rules were adopted in 2013.

Uber does have an automatic tipping option for its Uber Taxi service in Chicago, but it's fairly hidden, and drivers in other cities and on other Uber services have up to now been more or less out of luck.

"The work ahead for the TLC is to provide more transparency for drivers on how their earnings are calculated, to provide earning protections and a means of redress for those that are making less than a livable wage".

Those who are exclusively accepting payments in cash, would be able to continue accepting tips through the same channel as well and won't be required to offer a card-based tipping method. "Cuts to driver pay across the ride-hail industry has made tipping income more important than ever", said IDG founder Jim Conigliaro, in a press statement.

Of course, Uber had the opportunity to do the right thing by its drivers and add a tipping option in its app a year ago this month. In the past, the company has claimed that the median income for an UberX salary in New York City is $90,700.

"We have zero tolerance for any impaired driving", she said, citing Uber's "community guidelines", which state that any driver found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on the job will be "permanently deactivated" from the network.
