Michele's efforts to find her own sound were perhaps clouded by the circumstances at the time.

Speaking of Places, Lea Michele offered a few teasers about some of her favorite new songs. "I don't eat candy", she recently told E! These are moments and glimpses into my life. "I try to keep my life private but my songs are a chance to let fans in and see what I'm going through", she explained.

Although the star has been in relationships since Cory's death, notably dating Matthew Paetz for two years, she has not as yet settled down with a new beau. The Cannonball singer added: "I've had to come to a place in my life where I have the strength and joy to move forward - and to be thankful and believe in life again".

Glee had its share of stellar performances during its six-season run, like "Make You Feel My Love" and "Don't Rain On My Parade". She released Places, her first album since her 2014 effort Louder, on Friday, and told Today the record returns to her Broadway roots. In addition to the lead single, Love Is Alive, Places hosts the track Heavenly, which was co-written by British pop star Ellie Goulding. Kicking off on May 1, Michele will travel through North America making stops in Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Toronto, among others. "So it was hard for me to then go into the studio on the weekends and then say 'well then who am I alone or who am I as a solo artist?'"
