One dead, two wounded after gunman opens fire at Shops at Merrick Park

One person has died, and two others were injured after a shooting inside the Equinox Fitness Club in Coral Gables, according to the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.

Police patrol outside of the Shops at Merrick Park after a shooting, Saturday, April 8, 2017, in Coral Gables, Fla.

The person killed is believed to be the shooter, who committed suicide after opening fire, police said. Witnesses identified them as Equinox general manager Janine Ackerman and trainer Mario Hortis.

More than a dozen police cars and firetrucks were outside the mall for hours after the shooting.

Equinox member Shed Boren told The Herald the incident involved a disgruntled trainer: "I had just left Equinox, " he said.

Coral Gables Police Chief Edward J. Hudak told Local 10 News the incident stemmed from a managerial dispute that prompted the former gym employee to target two others who also worked at the fitness center.

Miami-Dade Police said on Facebook that it was "investigating a shooting at the Shops at Merrick Park".

There were chaotic scenes as witnesses say gunshots could be heard and an automated voice over a public address system urging people to evacuate or find shelter due to an emergency.

The Miami Herald reports that almost 100 people were eating at Yard House's outdoor patio when the shooting began.

A Coral Gables Police Spokesperson said the scene was secured by 1:45 p.m and officers are now investigating the incident. "People rushed inside. People were hiding under tables", he said.
