The latest event follows the 2017 Women's March, a worldwide protest in opposition to President Donald Trump, which was held January 21.

Organizers are encouraging men to help with domestic responsibilities and to rally alongside women for various issues, including equal pay and paid parental leave.

On International Women's Day, the left has made a decision to celebrate the day by encouraging women to boycott work and refrain from going to big businesses. "The decision is based exclusively on our ability to provide sufficient staff to cover all our classrooms, and the impact of high staff absenteeism on student safety and delivery of instruction", district officials said in the statement.

ACPS has been in contact with other jurisdictions about the day, Lloyd says, but "ultimately the decision is ours, because it's about how students are affected in our school district".

While systematic changes often require much time and grand gestures, we can not pretend praising privilege and continuing to allow the marginalized to stay in isolation makes measurable change.

The one-day "strike" has been criticised in some quarters, for focusing on privileged women able to opt out of a day's labour: Public school employees are among those with the job security to apply for statutory leave, enabling these school districts to make the call to close ahead of time.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina announced last week they would close for the general strike, again due to the overwhelming number of staff members who requested the day off.

The schools are located in the neighborhoods of Brightwood, Capitol Hill, Congress Heights, Petworth, Shaw and Trinidad.

Instead, Elzenga says, if women needed to shop, they should patronize women-owned businesses.

Wednesday is International Women's Day, which is usually celebrated in the United States with a feel-good events heralding the importance of women's rights. "Even if we were, I would have taken the day off to stand in solidarity against a hateful embarrassment of our country right now". DCist has compiled a list.

A sizeable march and rally is also expected to happen in New York City.

Some criticized the strike, warning that many women can not afford to miss work or find child care. If women can't strike, they are encouraged to wear something red in a show of solidarity.
